What was the Arena Like?
Hockey arenas occasionally become well-known for other reasons. Verdun always was a stopgap in QMJHL history - never home to any one tenant for more than seven years in a row - but among other things, it was a pivotal place in Quebec political history. Separatist rallies occurred in the building during both the 1980 and 1995 referendums. Historically, the Auditorium was the place you played as a musical act when you couldn't sell out the Forum. The building opened to military exercises in the Second World War - the arena didn't even get ice until after the war ended. The Montreal Canadiens have also practiced in the rink for ages.

I have never been to the Verdun Auditorium. If you have memories from the Auditorium, you can contribute by emailing Email.

How To Get There

From A-15/20: Exit at Exit 62 (boul. de la Vérendrye) and make an immediate left of rue Galt. When you reach boul. LaSalle near the river, the Auditorium should be right in front of you to the left.

Métro: De l'Église stop. (Green Line).

What's it Used For Today?
The Q took up residence in Verdun at the league's founding, with the Verdun Maple Leafs calling the place home from 1969-72. In 1977 the Éperviers moved down from Sorel and played there from 1977 to Christmas 1979, at which point they moved mid-season back to Sorel. The former Montreal Junior Canadiens took up residence as the Verdun Juniors from 1982-89, and finally, the Collège Français team played out of the building from 1991-94. The building today is used for conventions, political rallies, smaller-scale concerts, and as a practice rink for the Montreal Canadiens. The attached Denis Savard Arena also gets a fair amount of minor hockey traffic.

Next year, the Auditorium will be home to the reborn Montreal Juniors, who are moving from St. John's.
